13 Days Exotic Guilin and Yunnan explores: On this exotic journey to southwest China, you will explore the most scenically beautiful and ethnically diverse cities of China – Guilin, Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-la (Zhongian) and Shanghai. You will have an excellent photography opportunity to capture Guilin’s picturesque karst mountains, the stunningly beautiful landscapes of Yunnan and its diverse minority culture and the modern beauty of Shanghai. Cruise along the Li River, weave your way through the path of Stone Forest, hike through the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and explore the home of 24 of China’s 55 ethnic minorities in Yunnan.
Arrive in Guilin, the scenic city of China. Meet your experienced local guide and transfer to the hotel. Check in at your hotel. Rest of the day free at leisure.
Full day Li River Cruise. Li River is also the soul of Guilin scenery. Along the beautiful Li River and explore the luscious Chinese countryside. Enjoy lunch on board. Arrive in Yangshuo and explore the famous West Street. West Street is the oldest street in Yangshuo with a history of more than 1,400 years. Over the last 20-some years, West Street has become a meeting place for eastern and western cultures, and the biggest ‘foreign language center’ in China. Return to Guilin.
Fly to Kunming. Arrive in Kunming, capital of the Yunnan Province. Meet your local guide and transfer to the hotel. Rest of the day enjoy free time at your own leisure.
Explore the Stone Forest, a spectacular formation of limestone. This site is recognized as a UNESCO World attraction and as one of China’s most highly rated destinations. Enjoy the vast and varied collection of ethnic artifacts at the Yunnan Nationalities Museum, offering a rich overview of the history, culture and customs of the region’s 25 ethnic minorities.
Fly to Dali, an old town in Yunnan, known for its natural scenery, historical and cultural heritage, and vibrant nightlife. Explore the local market, and enjoy a warm welcome at family Yan’s private home. Cruise on Lake Er’hai and observe cormorant fishing, the famous fishing method of the local people. In the afternoon, participate in a cooking lesson by a local family before visiting a natural dye workshop. Finally, tour Chongsheng Temple with a battery-powered car and see the Dali Ancient Town.
Depart Dali for Lijiang and its world famous Old Town containing a remarkable system of waterways and bridges. Visit a Workshop for Handmade Silver and tour the Mu’ Palace, home of the Mu clan which led the Naxi people for over 700 years. Finally, soak in the sites at the Black Dragon Pool with its stunning view of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, before moving on to the Dongba Museum where you will learn to write in Dongba script.
Full day touring of Jade Dragon Mountain, a sanctuary for rare animals and wild plants. A cable car will take you to a mountain peak for spectacular views of the glaciers and the Lijiang valley. Visit the local clinic, the Baisha Mural Painting – powerful temple paintings created over a 300 year period during the Ming and Qing Dynasties and Yuhu Village, home to the Naxi ethnic minority, featuring homes built with unique rocks called “monkey head.”
Continue on to Zhongdian, known today as Shangri-La. See the Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the world’s deepest river canyons and part of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas World Hertitage Site. Marvel at the geological phenomenon and extraordinary panoramic scene offered by First Bend of the Yangtze River before visiting the old Tibetan towns of Stone Drum and Zhongdian Ancient City.
Today includes a visit to the Songzalin Temple, the largest Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Yunnan with its treasure-trove of beautiful artifacts, and a stop at the Pudacuo National Park with its emerald lakes and lush forests. To round out the day, we will visit with a Tibetan family where you catch an authentic glimpse of local life and converse one-on-one.
Fly to Shanghai, also known as “Paris in the East.” Rest of the day free at leisure.
Explore the past, present and future of Shanghai by walking along the Bund. Continue to Yu Garden with its largest outdoor bazaar . Learn about the silk weaving at the Silk weaving workshop. Chinese silk is one of the best souvenirs to bring home. Pass by the beautiful French concessions and the People square. Enjoy a farewell dinner.
Full day free at leisure or join an optional tour to Suzhou, “Venice of the East” and best known as the Garden City of China.
